The World Health Organization (WHO) announced yesterday (2/15) its approval of emergency use authorization (EUA) of the AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine is currently approved in the UK and EU, and the WHO’s approval opens more doors for other nations to expedite the approval process. For countries in the Covax program, the approval marks that the vaccine will be available for distribution. Dr. Mariângela Simão, WHO Assistant-Director for Access to Medicines and Health Products, stated, “Countries with no access to vaccines to date will finally be able to start vaccinating their health workers and populations at risk, contributing to the Covax facility’s goal of equitable vaccine distribution.”
