On Wednesday (1/6) the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it is tracking the COVID-19 testing diagnostics with SARS-CoV-2 test developers to determine the efficacy of the already-approved tests on their ability to detect new COVID-19 variants. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported more than 50 cases confirmed in the United States of the new strain, B.1.1.7 variant, which is more infectious than the original strain. There have also been additional reports of another strain in South Africa that is also more infectious, though there have yet to be any cases reported in the U.S.
