The FDA announced on Thursday (4/16) it was temporarily allowing compounding for necessary hospital drugs due to the mass shortage from Covid. The majority of the 13 commonly used drugs listed in the policy are anesthetic or analgesic drugs, which helps support patients on ventilators. Here are the drugs eligible for compounding:
- Cisatracurium besylate
- Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride
- Etomidate
- Fentanyl citrate
- Furosemide
- Hydromorphone hydrochloride
- Ketamine hydrochloride
- Lorazepam
- Midazolam hydrochloride
- Norepinephrine bitartrate
- Rocuronium bromide
- Vancomycin hydrochloride
- Vecuronium bromide
The FDA will allow outsourcing facilities to create what are essentially off brand copies of the above listed drugs that are in short supply, as long as they meet the temporary guidelines set in place.
For more information on the guidelines, as well as the drugs on the approval list, see here.
