The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted De Novo Clearance for Royal Philip’s IVC filter removal laser sheath, CavaClear. IVC filters are used to treat patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition in which blood clots form in the veins of the leg and groin and can travel through the rest of the circulatory system and into pulmonary system. CavaClear is a laser-assisted removal sheath and the first and only FDA-cleared solution to remove IVC filters. These filters are placed in the inferior vena cava to capture the blood clots from moving to the lungs and, if left in place over time, IVC filters can fracture and travel through the bloodstream to other parts of the body. Prior to CavaClear, failure rates for IVC filter removal were high with limited options for removal were available.
