Precisis GmbH has received Breakthrough Device Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Epicranial Application of Stimulation Electrodes for Epilepsy (EASEE) brain stimulator to treat epilepsy. EASEE is a system for individualized brain stimulation which is precisely placed above the origin of the epileptic seizure in the brain. Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder in which abnormal brain activity leads to seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations and sometimes loss of awareness. The treatment is minimally invasive – electrodes are surgically inserted only underneath the scalp so that the brain is untouched – and customized for each patient. The electrodes deliver targeted, calming currents to the brain area. Other therapies available for patients with focal epilepsy require complex and invasive interventions that may even involve removing affected areas of the brain. Precisis GmbH specializes in developing medical devices and minimally invasive neurostimulation methods for those affected by epilepsy.
